New! Improved! Beer!
30 05 2008Click on the picture for a better view!
The RedB is a new type of beer that my boyfriend, Brendan Chapman, has brewed. It is a red brew flavored with a hint of honey. The name comes from the “B” of Brendan’s name, and the color of the beer being red. Flip those around and you get a Red Bee!
I drew the red bee with colored pencils on red paper. I then scanned in the drawing and brought it into illustrator where I put the text into the drawing and also created the top and back labels.

*sigh*
22 05 2008I am spent.
I spend my time doing things that I don’t want to do. The things that I want to do I either don’t have time for, or when I do have the time, I am spent. I don’t have much to say here, just that it’s good that it’s a long weekend coming up, maybe I can get some done that I’ve been meaning to get done. But I’m not going to want to get them done… I’m going to want to drink and eat and swim, and do all the things that you’re supposed to do on Memorial Day weekend. And I know I’ll have a good time, but I have stuff to do!
It’s all about managing. I need to manage my time wisely and effectively to get the most out of my weekend. The most play, the most work, the most balance, the most of my friends, and the most of my art. The most fun.
Happy early Memorial Day, since I probably won’t have time to write another post before then… :)

Mother’s Day Present
13 05 2008My Aunt Jane came to me with a proposal for Mother’s Day. She wanted me to do a drawing of her son’s dog for his wife (her daughter-in-law). They have two children and just recently inherited this dog from a family friend. The two boys, Sean and Ryan take very good care of Kodi. (It was actually Ryan’s idea, that I draw the dog for his mom!) So I agreed with no hesitation. I love drawing animals, especially dogs.
Here is the picture of the dog that I drew. When Aunt Jane had given it to Nancy, her expression was priceless! The best part of giving someone a present like this is experiencing it when they first lay eyes on it.
This was created in colored pencil on a cream colored paper. The cream brought out a certain hue in his coat that would have been lost otherwise. (the scan doesn’t do it justice.) I created it 8×10 so she has the choice to buy her own standard frame or get it professionally framed — at Artsake Gallery!
Email me if you would like me to draw your own pet, or if you would like me to create a gift for a loved one.
I usually need a couple of different pictures, so I can see the distinctive markings on each pet, and get a general feeling of the animal’s personality. I am not limited to dogs either, I am eager and willing to draw any kind of animal you could throw at me… but please don’t throw your pet at me!

Juried Art Show
10 05 2008I have entered two pieces in the Arts of Tolland Annual Juried Art Show!
This is called Window, and it’s a colored pencil drawing of my boyfriend, Brendan, sitting at a window. I only drew in the highlights, and left the shadows the color of the paper. Jenny from Artsake Gallery framed this piece with a frame that is reminiscent of a window. I wanted to get an actual window frame to frame it with, but couldn’t find one! If anyone has any extra window frames lying around — let me know! I would love to be able to use it somehow in a piece. I’m always looking for neat things to use creatively.
This is a painting of my shoe. Obviously! I love Converse shoes, and own lots of different colors. My most recent buy is olive green low tops with teal stripes. This painting is done in watercolor and took me a couple of hours to do. I just wanted to paint one day, and chose to paint my shoe. I love my orange chucks! Jenny at Artsake also framed this piece. We chose a thin dark blue frame, that matches the lines in the sole (soul) of the shoe. Then the mat that we chose is a fabric orange that matches the shoe perfectly! To top it all off, we found grommets that we put centered on the bottom of the mat to match the grommets on the side of the shoe! That’s my favorite part!
So I hope both of these pieces get into the show, the opening is at the Arts of Tolland on Sunday May 18th, from 1 to 4 and the awards ceremony is from 2 to 3. I will keep you posted and let you know when I find out if I got into the show or not.
Wish me luck!

Pros and Cons
1 05 2008There are pros and cons that go along with freelancing. The pros are obvious. You get to work from home, your hours are flexible, and you get to work on lots of different projects. The part that I like the best is working on different projects all the time. The variety brings something different to the table every day. And the more I do different things, the more experience I get. I take my experience and apply it to all the different projects I’m working on.
Some of the cons of freelancing are obvious, some, not so much. Not knowing when you’re going to get paid is a struggle. It’s good to save up some money and have a safety net before quitting your full time job and going freelance. One of the not-so-obvious cons of freelancing is that you’re working from home. Wait, did I just list this as a pro AND a con? Yes, and I’ll tell you why. When you’re working with people day in and day out, and they don’t understand how you work — with your headphones on, so you can concentrate and drown out the outside world — it can be refreshing to work from home away from all that. But then you’re alone. All by yourself in your own little world. Where no one notices if you stop for a half an hour to write your blog, or surf the internet or get a snack. There’s not one person around to talk to about how crazy Paula is on American Idol, and what you’re going to do this weekend. It gets kind of lonely.
But I also do work on-site for various companies. This lets me get out and meet new people. I love meeting interesting people!
There are definitely some things to consider before freelancing full-time, but if you have the drive and commitment, and it’s something you really enjoy, you should definitely make the leap.
