Illustration Friday – Foggy

17 07 2008

Strolling in the woods at dawn,
through the fog I spotted a fawn
Though I could barely see his face,
he was small and full of grace.
He seemed to sense me that very morning.
Then, took off without a warning.

This is something quick for Illustration Friday, a little wet-on-wet watercolor painting. It’s a little different than I usually paint, a little more free-flowing. I hope that with these Illustration Friday exercises, I will learn how to let go, and just create instead of being so caught up with making everything perfect. When I want something to be perfect, I tend not to reach that goal, and get frustrated before it’s complete.

Doubt: A parable

17 07 2008

A new theater company has popped up in the Southeastern CT area. Emerson Theatre Collaborative (etc.) is producing their first play “Doubt” by John Patrick Shanley. It’s debut performance will be August 15-17, and August 21-23 at the Union Baptist Church in Mystic, CT.

I worked with the director, Albert Cremin, to create a poster that encompasses his vision of this award winning play. The crow is featured throughout as a side note and Albert chose this symbolic creature to represent his interpretation of the play. I helped Albert’s vision of the crow come alive with an image that will be featured on the posters, postcards, banners, the program, and advertisements.

Here is the image I created. This is created on white scratchboard paper, which I then drew on with Micron pens and certain elements were scratched out for detail.

I am also designing all the collateral that this image will be used in, posters, postcards and banner.

This is a wonderful group of people who are talented and genuine. I hope to see you all at the play! For more information please call (860) 706-9711 or visit: emersontheatercollaborative.org

Illustration Gallery

8 07 2008

I was in Plum Island, MA last month and stumbled upon Child At Heart Gallery. They have a lot of different originals, prints and posters for sale and they are all by illustrators! Everything they sell was once published in a book. I was awestruck. I want to be in this gallery. They had a vintage poster from 1971 of Maurice Sendak’s work. They had Dr. Seuss prints. They even had limited edition giclee’s of Mary GrandPre’s pieces. She is the pastel artist who illustrated the cover of all seven Harry Potter books!

I wanted to get something at this gallery. Something original. But all the original paintings/drawings were expensive (as they should be!). So maybe next time I go, I’ll save up some dough and purchase something original!

There was one piece. One piece that caught my eye. It is not original, it is a poster, but it is beautiful. It’s called Fairies by Trina Schart Hyman. She has illustrated over 100 books. This particular piece was in a book of fairy poems published in 1980. My amazing boyfriend saw that I liked this piece and decided to buy this poster for me and get it framed for my birthday. Here is a picture of the framed poster:

Fairy Drawing

The poem that was featured with this pen and ink drawing:
By Eleanor Farjeon

Don’t go looking for fairies,
They’ll fly away if you do.
You never can see the fairies
Till they come looking for you.

Isn’t it beautiful? Even the framing is gorgeous. (It’s done by Jenny at Artsake Gallery. I did the website for her). This is a great gallery for everyone that loves children’s books, or even, anyone who ever read a children’s book! Someday I will be featured in this gallery! I’m working on it!

Here’s the website again: http://www.ChildAtHeartGallery.com although if you enjoy illustrations, you really should go see it in person. It’s a small gallery, but has a lot of artwork in it!
